20 Years ago on November 1st 1979, Bao Trieu / Blijd's coordinator and
trainer Earl Blijd made his first entrance in the world of Martial Arts
inGroningen, the Netherlands. A memorable fact that we celebrated on October 23 through an
afternoon of festivities. The location of this event - the Sportshall of Rehabilitation
Centre Beatrixoord - was selected as for special reasons: after his accident in 1995,
Earl spent a number of months in this rehabilitation clinic.
About 200 people were present at this festive event. During the afternoon, members of
Bao Trieu / Blijd - both youth and grown ups - showed their splendid
Wushu-forms. Guided by Ms. Hongye Li, our guest teacher from China,
a Taiji form was demonstrated. And in a special demonstration Earl and some other
ex-patients of Beatrixoord showed what can be reached through perseverance.
The duo Clinch appeared with their spectacular fire-juggling-show, and Sidokwan,
from Hoogeveen, gave a beautiful Taekwondo-demonstration. The combined performance
of Earl with Juan Carlos and Irene Gonzlez (Salsa Cubana) clearly amused the public,
especially when Earl revealed himself as a salsa dancer.
But the highlight of this afternoon was formed by Earl's sparring sets with old-world
champions Riemer de Haan (pencak silat) and Larry Meijer (taekwondo).
Loudly encouraged by the public, the ex-champions showed how they still master a
number of beautiful fighting techniques.
Besides the demonstrations, there were mutual acknowledgements.
Earl and Bao Trieu / Blijd gave special mementos to the guests and to a
number of members that especially contributed to the Wushu society. And Earl r
eceived gifts from a number of martial art clubs in Groningen and from the
German branch of Bao Trieu. On behalf of the International Martial Arts Kung Fu Federation,
Ms. Wang Yang thanked Earl for his dedication to and promotion of Wushu.
It was a perfect festive afternoon, and we would like to thank everyone who contributed
to this event.
