Just like children may ask themselves why adults call their own drawings 'art' and those of children plainly 'children's drawings', I wondered, when reading the above titel, 'when is movement art?'. Are the movements of an infant less art than those of an adult performed on stage? Does anything like a useless movement exist?
I never did get the chance to continue philosophising about these questions on November 12th. The sounds of Kaan Taprak's djembes and the entourage in the halls of the Platform theatre took me into different realms. From beginning until end this was a fascinating world. Those present, both children and adults, had one thing in common: their love and interest for music, dance and rhythmic movement. The Chinese Lion Dance, for example, always displays different features you could have seen it a thousand times and still experience its uniqueness everytime. This afternoon, the Lion Dance was introduced by the talented Milou Middendorp. After that, the audience could enjoy the Capoeira that was performed by Gildo Val and Marco Huger. This 'tasted' like more...
What made this afternoon unique was the involvement of the audience. In part due to the possibility to use the djembes, the programme became truly interactive. The audience could participate: perfect! During the performance by the Turkish singer Sahin Kuuksahin, the audience even had to be conducted in order to prevent their drums from exceeding the singer's own music.
The one-but-last part of the programme was a Cuban/Salsa workshop by Juan Carlos Gonzles. For him, it was a home-game and that was obvious, too (Juan teaches dance classes in the same space). He surely made us sweat! The programme was closed by a jam session under supervision of Taprak. All of the present instruments were used. The dancers demonstrated their skills yet again. Earl Blijd of Bao Trieu proved to be a true sport and took on the challenge: Kung Fu meets Capoeira. For me, the most beautiful part of the day was the sight of a little girl performing a kind of mini Capoeira show of about 10 minutes to the music of the Djembes. We will see her again on stage for 'Rhythm and movement' sometime.
